My day in Miami

Started the day with a cup of fresh squeezed OJ & avocado toast from Zak the Baker
... it was so good.

Loving all the street art. Be careful where you step...
Pretty excited about my new membership with Shop Ditto. After signing up with their #endlesseyewear program, I never have to worry about running out (or not having the "newest") sunglasses again! Try their Endless Eyewear subscription for FREE when you use the promo code:
You will love all the designer sunglasses they have! It's like Netflix for your face.
Hung out in the Design District

This massive mural jungle was calling my name :)
Roxy Moure doin' her thing // through the lens of Donna Irene

Then we stumbled upon the new Laduree pop-up location and it was absolutely beautiful! Tucked back in a quiet Parisian courtyard, we enjoyed some tasty macaroons (My favorite was the pistachio flavor). But only, of course, after having taken several photos...especially in front of this beautiful LIVE wall - (no mural this time).

Our next stop- the Delano Hotel in South Beach. Donna had been wanting to check out their beautiful pool for some time now so we stopped by for a drink... and a nice view.

Lastly, we went to The Standard to snoop around the *famous* spa and watch the sunset before dinner.

Ever have an urge to get away?? Like, NOW!
I get that feeling a lot. I start googling flights, researching random places, staring at maps, and even checking Groupon for random trip deals.

With a week off school, I headed to Palm beach (where my parents live) to spend the holiday with them! As much as I love Palm Beach and can never seem to get enough, I wanted to explore. I needed to eat different food, walk unfamiliar streets, and treat myself to a day away.
I brainstormed...
The Bahamas are close, but I'd have to fly.
The keys aren't too far either, but the weather has been pretty windy!
So... I concluded, "Miami!"
It's only about an hour and makes a perfect destination for the day. My super cool(-er than me) friend Donna hosted me for the day and snapped some cool photos while we were out and about.
Without much of a "set plan," our day was packed eating, walking, hotel sightseeing and, of course, some pictures. (her photography is amazing). We also met Roxy, who brought her camera along too!

If you're ever having that urge to get away, but can't afford it at the moment or don't have the time, challenge yourself to be creative and travel somewhere nearby. A city or town you've always wanted to go to, a restaurant that just opened, a museum you drive by often and find yourself trying to peek in... Or, reach out to a friend who's in a neighboring city and take a road trip!

Whatever your situation may be or whatever the fuel is burning your desire to travel, I dare you. Reward yourself, drive, expand your pallet, meet new people.
It's refreshing and rejuvenating.
I promise.

Denim jackets and all smiles

I’m going to be honest with you…
I didn’t know how I was mentally, physically, and emotionally going to get this post ready and launched.
This week has not been easy. Putting a smile on was the last thing I thought about. I wanted to curl up in bed and watch Netflix as the week passed right by. But, I didn't! Instead, I punched and kicked stuff, had a
beer for my friends birthday, and got new sunglasses

I don’t need to go into details, but I’m sure you know where I’m coming from. A place of hurt, sadness, and confusion.

In moments like this, as I lie awake at 1:05 a.m., I am grateful for this blog. But it’s not just a blog. It’s a platform; an open platform. A blank canvas. An empty stage. A fresh notebook. A new coloring book.
I’m able to write, able to create, able to express, and able to share how I want and what I'm feelin'!
(that being said... I'm celebrating in bed as this is my 100th blog post!)

So, through this challenging week I’ve learned a lot that I believe putting into words will be inspiring & encouraging for both you and me:

1.     Be freaking thankful.
No matter your circumstance, there’s always something worse going on or someone suffering in a different, or even more drastic, way than you are. “I’m alive, I’m breathing, I’m safe and I’m fed.” SOO much to be thankful for.
2.     Life may be tough, but you are tougher.
Rise up when faced with challenges. It’s an opportunity to grow.
3.     This amazing quote I stumbled upon left me speechless…
“Actively, and with intent, become aware of the world and everything it holds. Not just about the outside world, but also the one in your head. Spend time alone because it is the only true way to get to know yourself."

I have no idea where I’m going with this post but I hope you feel encouraged and equipped to face a hard day when it arrives. Be thankful, strive to grow, don’t waste your time, and smile!

Check out my featured post on HerCampus where I'm talking about ways to style a denim jacket & head to Cole Couture to shop this beautiful dress (it runs small, get one size up!)

Oh, p.s. I get all my sunnies now from Shop Ditto. Sign up with the code MERMAIDSTILETTOS to try a month for free! It's like Netflix for your face. Rent designer sunglasses anywhere, anytime, on rotation!

Let Your Light Shine

One of my favorite things about Fall is BOOTS!! Short, tall, over the knee, w/ heels, w/o heels, leather, or fur…I'm all about the boots. And, the weather here is finally just cool enough to wear some booties, so I'm pretty excited.

My super fashionable friend Amy (who’s studying abroad right now…so jealous) has a beautiful blog I’m always looking to for inspiration. We met this summer in NYC and were instantly friends! Although our styles may be a little different, having her close by for outfit advice, blogging help, or for travel tips is such a great feeling!
So,  Amy and I decided to team up to show you all how we style our favorite black booties at this time of year... Once you’re done checking out my post, Head to Amy's post to see how she styled hers
Here are some favs I’ve set my eyes on and can't seem to forget about…

Another obsession of mine is gold jewelry. At Cole Couture last week I stumbled upon these Mantra Bands, and now I have 6 saved in my shopping cart… HELP.
I admit; I’m a sucker for little inspirational quotes. Out of the many mantras engraved
on these quaint golden bands, one of my absolute favorites is “let your light shine”.

I firmly believe everyone is given an opportunity in their lifetime to be the best they can be. It’s amazing how we are all so different. And, what really makes us unique is how we share our light…our personality, our dreams, our style, and our passions. But, sometimes we hide our light, or dim it, without even noticing.

Through social media, magazine covers, TV shows, etc. we are constantly fed images and scenarios that seem perfect. Our perception of normal is heightened and reality becomes altered. We desire to conform and desire to be like

I fall victim to this all the time. An article sparks my interest titled “How to grow your Instagram followers”, “How to have the perfect make-up routine”, “How to _____(you fill in the blank”.
I immediately click hoping to be routed to some superpower advice that will secretly make me better.
But, it’s not a secret. What I’ve noticed is that so many of these “how to’s” require me to be someone I’m not or encourage me to change an activity I currently enjoy.

Why? Why do we listen? And why do we follow along?

I’m not saying great tutorials/"how to" articles do not exist. (I just read one on the “best way to study for the GMAT”…yup that’s another story) However, my goal is to remind you, and remind myself, to filter what influences your thoughts and what you let affect you.

Don’t conform to the patterns of this world. Be unique, be you!
Know your light.
And know how you best let your light shine

One Step at a Time

Today I had an awesome, but kind of freaky thing happen to me.
I'm about to open up so hear me out...

Since the start of this semester I've been pretty stressed out. Figuring out what to do once Senior year is over, working on my blog, keeping my grades up, and somehow keeping a social life was starting to become a bit overwhelming. I'm sure you've been there before; everything starts adding up and you don't know where to begin. I started to let my worries consume my everyday thoughts. "What am I going to blog about next? Should I apply for Grad school? Maybe I should travel? But where do I get the money?"

The list goes on and on...
I was at a stopping point.
I wasn't enjoying life like I should.
I kept comparing, kept analyzing options, and kept getting down on myself.
I didn't have a plan and I didn't like that...

Being in complete control of your life is impossible. And in this most recent season of my life I have come to realize this more and more. I needed to start taking things one step at a time.

I stopped thinking about my plans after graduation that stressed me out and, rather, focused on what was in front of me. I compare it to worrying about marriage when you aren't even dating someone, or stressing over what you'll eat tomorrow when you're currently devouring a big mac. Doesn't make sense, right? Yeah, I thought so too. So, when worries arise, I now pause and remind myself of my new little reminder:
 "One step at a time"

Now, here’s where the supernatural (kind of creepy) part I mentioned comes in.
Last night I weirdly had a dream that I got a tattoo. Something that resembled "one step at a time."
I then woke up this morning to do some devotionals. I froze as I read the first three sentences...

"Walk peacefully with me through this day. You are wondering
how you will cope with all that is expected of you. You must traverse
this day like any other: ONE STEP AT A TIME."

Soon after, I went through my emails. I’m subscribed to the "the Skimm" and every day I am emailed a snippet of what's going on in the world, always with a creative title in the emails' subject.
This morning’s title happened to be: ONE STEP AT A TIME
AND, ironically, today's setting for my post (I shot days ago) takes place on a nice set of steps...

I am not kidding you!

It may not seem as crazy to you as it is for me, but when supernatural things happen it’s freaking awesome. And, I am instantly reminded that someone else is looking out for me, helping me along the way.
I encourage you to remind yourself when you may be  overwhelmed to approach life one step a a time.

When I started blogging two years ago I had no idea where it would take me, what exactly I’d post, or how. I've been taking it one step at a time. I’m grateful for this platform where I can express my love and creativity in fashion. However, there’s more to me than just what I wear

While in the past two years I've solely shared fashion related posts, and still plan to, I have decided to dedicate more time to simply writing. Writing about Life,  struggles I face, encouragement I feel others may need to hear, and share what goes on behind the lens.
I hope you can relate to me.
I hope you continue with me on this detour from the repetitive past.
I desire not to MAKE a life perfect for a picture, rather live a life worth capturing and sharing.
